1. Welcome, Opening Prayer & Worship (5 min)
Welcome
Welcome each child warmly.
Ask:
What is your favorite book?
Why do you like that book?
Have you ever had someone read a story to you?
Explain:
“Today we’re going to learn about the most important book ever written—the Bible! God’s people were so excited to hear God’s Word that they gathered together just to listen. Let’s discover why God’s Word is so special.”
Opening Prayer
Dear God,
Thank You for giving us the Bible. Thank You because Your Word teaches us, helps us, and shows us how to live. Help us love Your Word, understand it, and obey it every day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

2. Attention Grabber (3–5 min)
The Greatest Gift
Materials:
Wrapped gift box
Bible
Ask:
“Who likes getting presents?”
Allow children to answer.
Shake the gift box.
Ask:
“What do you think is inside?”
After several guesses, slowly open the gift and remove the Bible.
Say:
“Many gifts make us happy for a little while, but this gift helps us forever. The Bible is God’s gift to us. It teaches us about Him, helps us make good choices, comforts us when we’re sad, and shows us how much God loves us.”
Explain:
“Today we’ll learn about a day when people were so excited to hear God’s Word that they gathered together just to listen.”
3. Bible Story (8–10 min)
Ezra Reads the Law — Nehemiah 8:1–12
After many years away from Jerusalem, God’s people finally returned home. They rebuilt the city because God had kept His promise to bring them back.
One special day, everyone gathered together in a large open area. Men, women, and children came because they wanted to hear God’s Word. Ezra the priest stood on a tall wooden platform where everyone could see and hear him.
When Ezra opened the Book of God’s Law, all the people stood up to show respect for God’s Word. Ezra praised the Lord, and everyone lifted their hands and answered, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped God.
Ezra carefully read God’s Word aloud while other leaders walked among the people, explaining the Scriptures so everyone could understand.
As the people listened, many began to cry because they realized they had not obeyed God.
But Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites said,
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Instead of remaining sad, the people celebrated together. They shared food, rejoiced, and thanked God because they finally understood His Word.
That day reminded everyone that God’s Word is precious. It teaches us, corrects us, encourages us, and fills our hearts with joy.
Today, we have the Bible too, and every time we read it, God teaches us through His Word.
4. Bible Discussion Questions (5 min)
1. Who read God’s Word to the people?
Answer: Ezra the priest.
2. Why did the people gather together?
Answer: To hear God’s Word being read.
3. What did the people do when Ezra opened God’s Word?
Answer: They stood up to show respect for God’s Word.

Answer: They realized they had not obeyed God and felt sorry for their sins.
5. What did Nehemiah tell the people?
Answer: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
6. Why is God’s Word important?
Answer: It teaches us about God, shows us how to live, and helps us make wise choices.
7. How can we show that we love God’s Word?
Answer: By reading it, listening to it, learning it, and obeying it.
8. When can you spend time reading the Bible this week?
Answer: Any appropriate answer, such as before bed, after school, with family, or at church.
5. Heart Application (4–5 min)
The Bible is much more than just another book. It is God’s message to us because it teaches us who God is, how much He loves us, and how He wants us to live.
When we read God’s Word, we learn how to make good choices, how to treat others with kindness, how to pray, and how to trust God when life is difficult. The Bible reminds us that God is always with us and that His promises never fail.
The people in today’s story were filled with joy because they finally understood God’s Word. They realized that God loved them and wanted them to follow Him.
We can experience that same joy today. Every time we read the Bible or listen to someone teach it, God is speaking to our hearts. Even if we don’t understand everything right away, we should never give up. God wants us to keep learning and growing.
Ask the children:
Do I enjoy listening when God’s Word is read?
Do I thank God for giving me the Bible?
Am I willing to obey what God teaches me?
If I don’t understand something in the Bible, will I ask someone to explain it to me?
Remember: Asking questions helps us grow. God wants us to know Him better every day.

7. Bible Game (5–7 min)
Pass the Bible
Materials:
Bible
Music
Instructions:
Have the children sit in a circle.
Play music while they gently pass the Bible around the circle.
When the music stops, the child holding the Bible says:
“God, thank You for the Bible.”
Then the teacher asks one review question.
Continue until several children have participated.
Teaching Point
God’s Word is a wonderful gift from God that we should treasure and thank Him for.
8. Memory Verse (3 min)
Nehemiah 8:10
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Use the printable memory verse activity included with the lesson to help children practice and remember the verse.
9. Faith Challenge
This week, ask a parent, grandparent, or another trusted adult to read one Bible story with you each day.
Before reading, pray:
“God, help me understand Your Word.”
After reading:
Tell someone one thing you learned.
Practice today’s memory verse.
If there is something you do not understand, ask the person reading with you to explain it. God wants us to learn and grow by asking questions.
