The Bible Connection

Lydia was a seller of purple cloth. As she listened to Paul, the Lord opened her heart to respond to his message. Afterward, Lydia and the members of her household were baptized, and she invited Paul and his companions to stay in her home.

The purple felt in this craft reminds children of the purple cloth Lydia sold, while the words “I CAN SERVE GOD” remind them of an important truth:

Children can serve God with what they have.

They don’t need to have the same things Lydia had. They can help, share, welcome someone, encourage others, pray for someone, or help their family and Sunday School teacher.

Before class, print and cut out the shirt template provided below.

Use the template as a pattern to trace and cut one shirt from purple stiff felt for each child.

How to Make the I Can Serve God Craft

Step 1: Give Each Child a Purple Felt Shirt

Give each child one prepared purple felt shirt.

Remind the children that Lydia sold purple cloth and that the purple shirt will help them remember her Bible story.

Step 2: Write “I CAN SERVE GOD”

Using a fabric marker, have the children write:

I CAN SERVE GOD

For younger children, teachers can write the words beforehand or lightly outline the letters for children to trace.

Step 3: Decorate the Shirt

Let the children decorate their shirts with self-adhesive foam stickers such as hearts, flowers, stars, or crosses.

As they work, remind them:

“Lydia used what she had to serve God, and I can serve God with what I have too.”

For ages 6–10, let children write the words themselves and encourage them to think of one specific way they can serve God during the coming week.
